Pretty sure there is a tripod screw hole under the foam grip if you want to ditch the PVC.
Have fun with that thing (don't poke your eye out LOL).

I am planning a 250 mile SOTA expedition, starting on July 28th at Donner Summit, hiking south to Mammoth, ending about Aug 16. There are a zillion peaks. I won't be able to get them all but I will try to get a few. I will post details in a separate thread as we get closer to my start date. I'll be carrying a SPOT GPS Tracker and I could add you to the list of people who will receive a message when I start climbing a peak if you are interested in chasing. Some of the peaks in Yosemite are 10 points. The angle into Auburn might be poor but if you are a serious chaser, you might venture to a good place when you see me in proximity of a giant! LOL

Nice antenna!

I will only be doing 2m since I don't have an HF rig I would be willing to carry for 250 miles!!!

Nice antenna!

Re: Finished my amsat sota set up

Greg - KO6TH

Nice setup, Mark.  Hope you get a chance to work a satellite soon.  The ISS still has the repeater on, probably for a few more days.  During the day would be the best time to listen for it, and at night to try to get through.  SO-50 is also a good one, as it has really good receiver, but the transmitter is only 1/4 watt, so listen carefully.

One thing to be aware of is that satellites spin, so the orientation of their antennas change in real time during the pass.  You'll have to be able to spin the antenna to match the satellite, or you'll lose the signal.   Worse, most of the small satellites have their transmit and receive antennas in the same plane.  One whip sticking out one end, and the other band's whip sticking out the opposite end.  The Arrow antenna has the two band antennas at 90 degrees from each other, so if you can hear the satellite, chances are it won't hear you (and vice versa).

I'm guessing that the PVC "T"s around the antenna shaft allow the antenna to rotate?   That will help, but best bet may still be to use the Arrow in a hand-held fashion, so you can wave it around (pretend you're blessing the sky) for the best signal.  Then flip it 90 degrees with your wrist when you key up.  The antenna WILL get heavy pretty quickly, but we all need more exercise, right?

Good luck!

I am also using a QTY8900r (80$), 25 watt portable and an Rc 3 cell lipo. Anderson connectors.  All fits in a backpack nicely.  The antenna is rated 10 watts handheld, up to 150w mounted. I don't think I would test that upper limit.

I got the antenna from ham radio outlet. Model 146/437-10, from Arrow antennas, 95$. I'm using a baofeng UV-5R8W for 2 meter, and a Baofeng 5-R for 440.  I did not go with the duplexer.  Sma cables from Amazon with bnc adapters and an old camera tripod that I had in a closet.  It works well int the repeater from Lincoln, have not tried amsat yet.  Sitting in my back yard listening on 146.520 for sota spotting action.  I'm also getting an attenuator this week.  I plan to fox hunt with this rig too.

I really like it. Was it completely home brewed or did you find a plan somewhere? I would like to copy it. I had my first experience with satellites at the club field day and I loved it.
