Re: FT 70DR #repair #digital

Tal Deus - W6SOM

I had recently gotten a FT-70, and this caught my interest. I contacted the maker at diyham.ru. Virtpil@... incase anyone wants their email to order one. It was $40 shipped via paypal. Arrived in a week to my door. Well made and working perfectly so far. I am using Samsung 3000mAh 18650 button top batteries. I will report back with battery life in a few days.

Re: FCC Issues Advisory Ahead of Inauguration, Warning of Illegal Radio Use

Ron - KA6AUI

It would be nice to see rioters arrested and not try to be concerned about their means of communicating.  I can't image the FCC checking people in a crowd to see what kind of radio/phone or whatever they might have.

Oh well, a new year, new strange things happening!

Re: FCC Issues Advisory Ahead of Inauguration, Warning of Illegal Radio Use

Alan - W6WN

Right. Most people probably don't know the difference between Ham Radio and "PRS," and lump them all together.

Questioning the OP on the linked-to Reddit feed seemed to confirm the D.C. chatter was GMRS (and, by extension, FRS, which can monitor-only GMRS Repeater transmissions).

As an aside to this, we noticed a big uptick in chatter in Coloma right after Christmas. Turns out a bunch of new FRS radios families were getting for Christmas had come stock out of the box tuned to Ch. 22 / "Tone 1" (= 67.0 Hz PL). Transmissions up and down the river were unlocking GMRS radios in the Coloma Lotus Neighborhood Radio Watch group set up for our GMRS Channel 22 Repeater, also using 67.0 Hz on both transmit and receive.

Re: FCC Issues Advisory Ahead of Inauguration, Warning of Illegal Radio Use

I wasn't particularly happy about the way this was announced on a TV news blurb I saw. They focused on Ham radio and, IMO, hinted that we might be another avenue of communication that may possibly need to be "shut down". If announcements and speculation like this take hold enough to turn public sentiment, we may have a serious PR problem on our hands that could lead key people to say "why the heck do we need that antiquated hobby anyway? We have the Internet and plenty of 'professional infrastructure'".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's nothing similar to 2A to protect ham radio. Since it's all handled at the bureaucrat level, they wouldn't even need to go through the process of passing a law through Congress and so on... unelected officials could pull the plug overnight - they don't even have to go through the "Request for Comment" process or anything. Some will no doubt suggest I'm overreacting, but seriously - am I technically wrong?

I get the reason for the FCC notice, at least on the surface. Although I think it's a little odd that the notice wasn't sent out months ago, because various radios were used to coordinate riots throughout the summer as well. I doubt many if any licensed amateurs were involved (then or now)... but there are always a few bad apples in every significant sized batch.

Fun times. Happy New Year everyone.

FCC Issues Advisory Ahead of Inauguration, Warning of Illegal Radio Use

Alan - W6WN

(As if you didn't already know this...)

Per concerns that radios might might have been used to coordinate activities prior to the Capitol riot and leading up to the inauguration, the FCC Enforcement Bureau issued a rare Sunday advisory to remind licensees and operators in the Amateur and Personal Radio Services that they may not use radio equipment to commit or facilitate crimes.

Re: New base antenna install + old antenna & mount #antennas

Erik - W6EMR

The mag mount antenna ( 36" tall) is what I have been using for the last year or so. SWR was 1.3 across the whole band, no adjustments made.
The gain was rated at 3.0 dBd, but with 75' of lmr 400, I was probably at unity gain.
The new one is rated at 5.2 dBd and is over 7 ft. Tall.
Roof is 27' above grade.

Hi Erik,

That whip antenna (lower left)...  Interesting mount!

But the antenna's base (the black part) looks like something that's intended to mount on a car roof or such, i.e. a ground plane.  If so, the bracket probably isn't enough, and you might need something by way of counterpose wires or elements to make it resonate / radiate properly.

Old magmount antenna is Cushcraft cs-270m (no longer manufactured).
New antenna is Hustler CG-144 with MKR-2 radial kit.
Initially, swr was over 2 to 1.  I Had to remove 2-1/4" from lower section to get a 1.2 swr.
Half-wave loop on the bottom for 2 meter SSB work.

Jetstream JTB3 dual-band base station antenna FREE FREE FREE #forsale

Edited

To All --
My antenna found a home with new club member Charles Giasson KN6LDK. So color it "SOLD."

Have taken my JTB3 out of service. Still works jus' fine. VSWR remains <2.0.
There's only one catch: I'm offering this antenna for the paltry sum of $0.00 to a new Tech-licensed member of our club. For anyone else, there will be a surcharge ;-)
The "buyer" will need to pick it up at my domicile in Citrus Heights or at a meet spot somewhere in my locale.

Just want to pay forward for all others more seasoned hams have done for me in the past.

Contact me at my email address above or at 530-401-4838.

As to everyone that reads this: be safe and be well!

DIY Antenna Tuner Video

I came across this article about videos by ZL2CTM showing how he designed and built a simple antenna tuner.

I like the build and I like how he went through the design steps and followed up with a demo using the NanoVNA.

January presentation videos up on YouTube (and a request!)

Greg D

Hi folks,

The presentation videos from this month's SFARC General Meeting are up on our YouTube channel.  There are three this month, with Orion's Tech-10 talk about Winter Field Day (coming in 2 weeks!), Clyde's inside-view of the new W6EK repeater system, and adding Joe's request for volunteers for the Western States Endurance Run.

A request:  For next month (February 2021), the plan is to have Clyde follow up with a bit more information, particularly on the 2 Meter repeater which is still undergoing some change.  If you have any questions about the system, please let me know and we'll try to have it addressed.
