An item of discussion on the morning net the other day was the underseas cables.  I came across this map which was titled, "Underwater Cables that Sustain the Internet."  I offer it here to further the discussion.  Where did I find this you ask?  Click here.  The map does not explain the line colors.

Hello Everybody!

The California QSO Party (CQP) is only one week away.  YIKES!!

This is a great contest to get your feet wet in Radio Sport.  It is the one time of year the rest of the country and Canada wants to hear from California and there will be plenty of action!!

El Presidente Brian, AI6US, and I will hoist the W6EK callsign and run a expeditionary portable contest station.  Location is still up in the air, with the forest closures and all, but we have narrowed it down to somewhere along Foresthill Divide Road, i.e. Mumford Bar Campground, or I-80, i.e. Blue Canyon Airport (Blue Canyon is the front runner at the time of this writing).  If you would like to help out the W6EK team, and we especially need CW operators, you are whole heartedly invited to join us.  Please let me know.

You CAN help the team from home!  The CQP has a Club category.  Every log submitted on behalf of SFARC will be combined with ours for a Club score.  If you only have a few hours or just don't want to make the trip, operate from home!  Last year SFARC ranked 12th in the small club category.  In 2018, we ranked 6th!  Help us climb back on top, plan to work the California QSO Party!

No idea where to start?  Need help?  Feel free to give Brian, AI6US, Dennis, WU6X, or Me a call and we will gladly get you pointed in the right direction.  Working a contest is easy and action packed.  Even with S&P you can expect an easy 15 contacts per hour.  During heavy times, i.e. at the start and ends of the contest, that number can be 25-30 per hour.  I encourage you to give it try!!

The CQP rules and other excellent information is on their website at http://cqp.org/index.html

Looking forward to hearing you on the air!

We also said, in last month's Zoom meeting, that we would have a talk on fox hunting in September, with a club fox hunt scheduled in October. Both are still going to happen. Here's the details on our September meeting:

Clint, K0GR, from Ames Iowa, will give a talk on Fox hunting 101 - Intro To Radio Direction Finding. Clint is the ARES Emergency Coordinator for Story County Iowa and a very active ham. He's into emergency communications but also active every year in Field Day and some of the QSO parties.

Day: Thursday, September 24th (TONIGHT!)

Time:
6:30-7:00 - Chat
7:00-8:00 - Presentation

Where: Well, Zoom of course!

So we can generate a roll-call, registration in advance is required for this meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIld-itrjovGtSWT4DlDZo9uIHrSwqoFGnR

While the TV might be the source, it likely wasn't the cause. More likely that this was a bad line tap, a connector suckout, etc. that allowed interference to backfeed.

This new generation will be significantly impacted by a licensing fee and would likely not pursue an amateur radio license at all. I am deeply concerned that the effect of a fee will significantly reduce the number of amateur radio candidates coming from generations to come, and recommend no fees be charged."

Re: FCC License Fee Proposal Comment #QST

Greg D

Hi Dennis,

I'm not sure what the best approach to take in this...  The twisted backronym name of the act that precipitated it, the
“Repack Airwaves Yielding Better Access for Users of Modern Services Act” of 2018, appears to me to be intent on reducing the current occupancy of the spectrum, in order to re-allocate ("repack") it for other uses.  Pointing out that the fee will accomplish that goal is telling them that they are exactly right in imposing it, for the purposes of the act.  That's not the outcome we want.

I think, perhaps, a better approach might be to focus on the value that the Amateur Service creates for the country, and that replacing that value through other services would be more expensive than keeping our community intact and vibrant.  Instead of instituting a fee, they should encourage the Amateur Service by removing any and all impediments to its growth.  If this is about money, what's better than free?

Just my opinion,

Greg  KO6TH
