Re: FCC Proposes to Reinstate Ham License Fees
I like the idea of lowering the cost for a GMRS license, but a $50 fee to renew my ham license isn't a pleasant thought.
I was thinking of changing to a 5 call, once I move to Texas, but I won't bother if it's going to cost me $50.

Some Californians Didn’t get Evacuation Alerts During Wildfires
Sent to me by Greg Kruckewitt <kg6sjt@...>
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - When Debra DeAngelo went to sleep, she thought the flames chewing through Northern California wine country were too far away to be dangerous. Plus, she had signed up for all the alerts that emergency officials pressed on people after years of catastrophic wildfires.
A frantic phone call from her friend woke her up two hours later: The ranch where they both boarded their horses was ablaze. DeAngelo raced to rescue terrified animals that night last week, furious she got no official warning by phone, text or siren.
“They alert us about all kinds of crap, but this was life-threatening,” she said, adding that she got an alert in April about a bear sighting 15 miles away. “If fire’s going to be a way of life for California, we at least have to have an alert system.”

Well, I just paid $70 for the GMRS license, but I did not have to pay for the vanity call early this year. C'est la vie. Mike N6MRP

Proposed New Fees for Amateur Radio and Reduction in GMRS Fees
Citing the costs involved in the automated processes, routine maintenance of the Commission’s Universal Licensing System (ULS) and limited instances where staff needs to be involved in the application process, the FCC is proposing an across-the-board fee of $50 for new and modified licenses in the personal radio services, which includes Amateur Radio and the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS). For GMRS, this is a reduction of the current $70 fee.
The FCC also proposes these fees for license renewals and requests for vanity call signs, the latter which had its filing fee eliminated several years ago. The FCC is proposing to still not charge for administrative updates, such as mailing address changes on amateur or GMRS applications. Amateur Radio will remain exempt from annual regulatory fees under Section 9 of the "RAY BAUM'S Act." Section 8 of the RAY BAUM’S Act does not provide any kind of statutory exemption for filing fees in the Amateur Radio Service, which, historically has had no filing fees. https://www.kb6nu.com/fcc-proposes-new-fees-for-amateur-radio-licenses/ So..., if you're still thinking about getting your Ham License or Vanity Call Sign, save $50 and get started Now!

Re: Emergency Alert Difficulties, Again
Jef - N5JEF
Alan - Thank you very much for sharing this. In many ways, "the system" is broken or needing improvement, and it's important that we consider the challenges facing us in the bigger (and bigger…) picture rather than the immediate, knee-jerk, short-sighted responses that tend to commonly prevail. - Jef

Emergency Alert Difficulties, Again
It's not just the cell phone towers, it's the whole system... As fire crews battle a massive system of wildfires sparked by freak lightning storms, emergency officials are seeing the technological shortcomings of localized alert systems — and it’s far from the first time. Despite heeding much of the emergency management guidance dispensed in the last year from Sacramento, counties dealing with the LNU Lightning Complex fire burning in Northern California have nonetheless encountered difficulties.
